In the report, Piper Jaffray writes, “As we near the beginning of the official holiday season, retail sales trends remain solid suggesting Black Friday results are likely to show a modest y/y increase. Retailers are offering free shipping, price matching and additional store hours to capture market share in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive holiday season. The holiday season still has a long way to go after this weekend as Black Friday accounts for 6% of holiday sales and the weekend accounts for 12% of holiday, but consumer response to the upcoming weekend will help set the tone for the remaining weeks.”

Companies included in the Piper Jaffray report are: Target (NYSE: TGT), Kohl's (NYSE: KSS), JC Penney (NYSE: JCP), Macy's (NYSE: M), Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT)
