Calgon Carbon's Gila Bend Plant Recognized - Analyst Blog

Calgon Carbon Corporation CCC said that it received the 2014 Excellence in Sustainability Award for its Gila Bend, AZ, plant from the Arizona Manufacturers Council AMC during the AMC's annual Manufacturer of the Year Summit & Awards Luncheon.

The Gila Bend plant became operational in 2013. The facility is equipped with the most modern and energy efficient tools which help in recycling or reactivation of granular activated carbon (GAC), used in drinking water applications. The plant adheres to the public policies, thereby ensuring safe drinking water along with regional growth and economic prosperity.

The GAC products at the plant protects the public drinking water from various threats such as disinfection by-products and various organic contaminants, including contaminants of emerging concern, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products that find their way into drinking water supply.

Gila Bend has been exclusively designed to provide custom reactivation of GAC. It produces 15 million pounds of reactivated carbon per year for use by municipalities.  

Moreover, the facility provides cost savings and environmental benefits that are also utilized by the Arizona water utilities including the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Glendale, among others. The plant utilizes technology developed by Calgon Carbon that has reduced the cost of using GAC by as much as 40% and has also reduced carbon footprint associated with GAC utilization by up to 80%.

Calgon Carbon's shares were up 1% in the trading session last Friday. The stock has gained around 19% over a year.

Calgon Carbon is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock.

Other companies in the pollution control industry worth considering include Fuel-Tech, Inc. FTEK, Vertex Energy, Inc. (VTNR) and Pure Cycle Corporation PCYO. All of them carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
