OmniVision Launches New Products - Analyst Blog

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OVTI recently announced the launch of its OV10640 image sensor, which uses backside illumination BSI technology and comes with a new strong complementing processing chip, OV490. Both OV10640 and OV490 samples are available for examination. They are anticipated to achieve the AEC-Q100 Grade-2 prerequisite and step into volume production in fiscal fourth quarter of 2014.

OV10640 is an image sensor-based on OmniBSI technology and is the automotive industry's first BSI image sensor. It is enabled with supreme sensitivity to capture high-definition, full-resolution images of 1.3 megapixels and stream videos at a speed of 60 frames per second (FPS).

Moreover, the image sensor offers high dynamic range (HDR) of nearly 120 decibel (dB) in well compressed automotive-grade packages. With OmniVision's exclusive HDR operating and processing tools, the sensors reduce motion artifacts, thereby producing clear images up to the dynamic range of 120 dB along with RAW output.

The companion processor chip OV490 allows the simultaneous production of completely processed image files in YUV or RGB data format for applications based on display along with the RAW data for system-visualization downstream processing. The OV490's advanced ISP aids high-quality image capture and video streaming. Its distinctive design is enabled to process two video channels, which results in reduction of material costs.

Therefore, with the combination of the OV10640's improved performance and OV490's advanced processing ability, OmniVision intends to offer high-definition, low-noise and clear images and videos to advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) applications across an extensive variety of vehicle platforms. Moreover, this will help the company to address consumer preference toward superior automotive features.

OmniVision produces leading-edge digital imaging solutions and designs, and develops and sells image-sensor devices globally. It currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Some better-ranked stocks in the same sector include Applied Micro Circuits Corp. AMCC, PLX Technology Inc. PLXT and Rambus Inc. RMBS. All these stocks sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
