South Korean wireless operator, SK Telecom Co. LTD. SKM and Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), a division of Nokia Corp. NOK recently jointly commercialized the Uplink CoMP (Uplink Cooperative Multi Point) technology. This marks the first commercialization of Uplink CoMP technology in the world. Currently, both Nokia and SK Telecom carry a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

The most important innovation of the Uplink CoMP technology is that it directs signals which it receives from mobile devices to multiple basestations and combines these signals to increase signal strength. This technology also significantly augments the performance of the link and therefore is very helpful for social media users who upload photos and huge media contents. SK Telecom has decided to use this technology to integrate all its LTE basestations by the end of 2014.

In July 2013, NSN entered into an agreement with content delivery network operator CDNetworks to accelerate the delivery of mobile content. Liquid technology is a software solution for network infrastructure that drastically reduces the need for dedicated hardware.

The liquid technology of NSN is a software solution that shares all network resources across all wireless and broadband networks. Therefore, carriers can now exploit their relatively underutilized basestations in the rush hours to ease network traffic congestion.

Recently, NSN has decided to add more location-aware capabilities to its base stations. This will be done through enhancing the company's Liquid applications for which NSN collaborated with ChinaCache. NSN is conducting trial runs with several wireless operators to test its liquid technology. Notable among them is SK Telecom.

Notably, Nokia decided to vend its core mobile handset and services division to Microsoft Corp. MSFT. The deal is expected to close within a couple of months. Post the divestiture, NSN will become the company's chief business division with approximately 90% of the total revenue. Last year, some industry reports stated Nokia's intent to acquire Alcatel-Lucent S.A. ALU to strengthen its U.S. business, which the company ultimately rebuffed.
