Summary:
Rock-Tenn Company's first-quarter fiscal 2014 earnings increased 23% year over year to $1.66. Going forward, Rock-Tenn will benefit from the Simpson Tacoma Kraft Paper Mill and NPG Holding acquisitions, strong results in the Merchandising Displays and Consumer Packaging segments and further share repurchases. However, inclement weather on the East Coast has had a negative impact of 0.40 per share on earnings in the second quarter of 2014. In addition, higher old corrugated container costs and weak customer demand for containerboard and corrugated containers remain concerns. We, thus initiate our coverage on Rock-Tenn with an Underperform recommendation and a target price of $96.00.

Overview:

Headquartered in Norcross, GA, Rock-Tenn Corporation RKT is one of North America's leading integrated manufacturers of corrugated and consumer packaging.

In the first quarter of fiscal 2014, Rock-Tenn announced a realignment of its operating responsibilities and a related change to its segments for financial reporting purposes. Following the realignment, the company now reports its results in four reportable segments ? Corrugated Packaging, Consumer Packaging, Merchandising Displays and Recycling.

Corrugated Packaging (68% of revenues in the first quarter of fiscal 2014) The segment primarily manufactures containerboard, corrugated sheets, corrugated packaging and preprinted linerboard for sale to consumer and industrial products manufacturers and corrugated box manufacturers. The segment produces a full range of high-quality corrugated containers designed to protect, ship, store and display products made per customers' merchandising and distribution specifications. It also converts corrugated sheets into corrugated products ranging from one-color protective cartons to graphically brilliant point-of-purchase packaging.

Consumer Packaging (20%) The consumer packaging converting operations include folding carton converting operations as well as Rock-Tenn's 65% owned solid fiber interior packaging converting operations. The company operates an integrated system of recycled mills and a bleached paperboard mill that produce paperboard for its converting operations as well as third parties.

Merchandising Displays (8%) The segment manufactures and assembles temporary and permanent point-of-purchase displays. These displays are used as marketing tools to promote new product introductions and specific product promotions in mass merchandising stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, home improvement stores and other retail locations.

Recycling (4%) The recycling operations procure recovered paper (also known as recycled fiber) for Rock-Tenn's paper mills as well as for third parties from factories, warehouses, commercial printers, office complexes, grocery and retail stores, document storage facilities, paper converters and other wastepaper collectors.
