Shield Debuts as the First Application Built on the SDK, Launching Alongside Aztec v5
The Clean SDK addresses one of Web3's longest-standing challenges: enabling privacy without sacrificing accountability. Rather than forcing developers to choose between user confidentiality and regulatory expectations, the SDK combines zero-knowledge proofs with programmable verification, allowing applications to prove that users are legitimate participants and that funds have passed sanctions screening while keeping personal identities private.
"Privacy without accountability invites abuse, while accountability without privacy becomes surveillance," said Shady El Damaty, co-founder of human.tech. "The Clean SDK eliminates that false choice by giving developers programmable building blocks for private, accountable applications. Shield demonstrates what's possible today, but our goal is to enable an entire ecosystem of applications built on the same foundation."
Designed for builders on Aztec, the SDK enables developers to integrate programmable privacy directly into decentralized applications instead of engineering identity verification, sanctions screening, and zero-knowledge infrastructure independently. Applications built with the Clean SDK can offer users confidential transactions while maintaining transparent accountability through cryptographic proofs.
Shield serves as the flagship implementation of the Clean SDK, showcasing how these capabilities work together in production. While Shield focuses on private bridging between Ethereum and Aztec, the SDK is designed to support a broad range of financial applications, autonomous agents, and decentralized services requiring privacy-preserving verification.
The launch also reflects growing demand for institutional infrastructure that balances privacy with transparent accountability. Rather than relying on traditional identity databases, the Clean SDK keeps identity data encrypted off-chain, with screening applied at both entry and exit (not only onboarding) and a gated disclosure mechanism intended only for legitimate legal requests.
