A recent study reveals that marijuana users have higher levels of heavy metals in their blood and urine compared to non-users.

According to a report published on Wednesday by The Hill, the study was conducted at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health using data from over 7,200 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The research segmented participants into five categories, including non-marijuana/non-tobacco, exclusive marijuana, exclusive tobacco, and dual marijuana and tobacco use. The research analyzed participants’ blood for five distinct metals and their urine for sixteen different metals.

Postdoctoral researcher, Katlyn McGraw, stated, "Our results therefore indicate marijuana is a source of cadmium and lead exposure."

The World Health Organization cautions that no level of lead concentration is safe, particularly for children. Both lead and cadmium can result in significant health complications and even fatalities.

Tiffany R. Sanchez, the senior author, highlighted the necessity for further investigation into the utilization of cannabis and its potential pollutants, notably metals. This urgency arises from the increasing population of cannabis consumers.
