Dow and S&P Post Moderate Gains; Nasdaq a Small Loss

The U.S. stock market ended the quarter with a mixed session. The Dow and S&P posted moderate gains, while the Nasdaq fell slightly, in part due to a 1.69% loss in Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 66 points to close at 13,212. The widely watched blue-chip average traded in a range between 13,148 and 13,224. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY) gained 0.41% on the session and closed at $140.81. Volume was light with around 130 million SPY shares trading hands compared to a 3-month daily average of 142 million. The PowerShares QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ), which tracks the performance of the Nasdaq 100, fell 0.19% to $67.55. The QQQ ended the quarter with a huge gain of 21%. Crude oil was slightly higher on the session. NYMEX crude futures, the U.S. benchmark, rose 0.30% to $103.09. ICE Brent contracts added 0.47% to $122.96. In ETF trading, the United States Oil Fund ETF (NYSE: USO) fell 0.15% and closed at $39.23. Precious metals also rose on the trading session. COMEX gold futures added 0.91% to $1,670 while silver futures gained 0.76% to $32.235. The heavily traded SPDR Gold Trust ETF (NYSE: GLD) climbed 0.53% to $162.14. Treasuries sold off sharply on the day. The iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE: TLT) fell 1.70% to $112.20. The yield on the 10-Year Note rose 5.2 basis points to 2.21%. The U.S. Dollar was slightly lower on Friday. The PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish ETF (NYSE: UUP), which tracks the performance of the greenback versus a basket of foreign currencies, lost 0.14% to $21.91. The closely watched EUR/USD pair is currently trading at $1.3333.
