Stocks posted small gains on Friday amid light trade. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added a little more than 34 points and closed at just below 13,081. The widely watched blue-chip index traded in a range between 13,003 and 13,100. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY) gained 0.32% to close at $139.65. Volume was lighter than normal with around 120 million SPY shares trading hands versus a 3-month daily average of 140 million. The PowerShares QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ), which tracks the performance of the Nasdaq 100, fell 0.06% while the broader Nasdaq registered a gain of 0.15%. The underperformance in the QQQ was driven in part by a 0.55% loss in Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). Crude oil rose on the day amid continued worries about global supply disruptions. NYMEX crude futures added 1.33% to $106.75 while ICE Brent contracts climbed 1.48% to $124.96. In ETF trading, the United States Oil Fund ETF (NYSE: USO) gained 1.32% to close at $40.67. Precious metals also rose on the session led by silver. COMEX gold futures gained 1.22% to $1,662.50 while silver futures jumped 2.71% to $32.47. The heavily traded SPDR Gold Trust ETF (NYSE: GLD) climbed 1.25% on the session and closed at $161.53. Treasuries also rose on the session along with riskier assets. The iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE: TLT) gained 0.92% to $113.18. The yield on the 10-Year Note fell 4.6 basis points to 2.23%. The U.S. Dollar fell on the day against most major currencies. The PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish ETF (NYSE: UUP), which tracks the performance of the greenback versus a basket of foreign currencies, lost 0.54% to $22.02. The closely watched EUR/USD pair closed at $1.3264.
