As the conflict in Ukraine persists, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has landed in Lithuania to attend a significant summit with European leaders, focusing on the war and regional security.

What Happened: Zelenskyy arrived in Vilnius, Lithuania, to participate in a key summit and engage in discussions with various European leaders, Reuters reported on Thursday.

Zelenskyy’s visit is primarily for the Three Seas Summit, which sees attendance from leaders of twelve central European nations, including Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is expected to dominate the summit’s discussions.

Before the summit, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. The two nations are set to sign a security agreement, with Zelenskyy emphasizing the urgency of bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and consolidating international backing to counteract “Russian terror.”

Why It Matters: Zelenskyy’s visit comes amid recent missile strikes on Ukraine’s power infrastructure by Russian forces that have caused extensive damage, underscoring the urgency for enhanced air defense systems.

The U.S. recently inked a $138 million deal to maintain and upgrade Ukraine’s HAWK air defense systems, bolstering the country’s capabilities against drone and cruise missile attacks.

Amid these developments, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any F-16 fighters deployed in Ukraine would be targeted while denying any plans to attack NATO countries.
