Johnson defended his actions, stating that while he agreed with Greene on several issues, the appropriations bills were necessary to prevent a government shutdown. Greene, however, cited the spending package as the reason for her decision to file the motion to vacate.
"Look, Marjorie Taylor Greene filed the motion. It's not a privilege motion so it doesn't move automatically. It's just hanging there. And she's frustrated. She and I exchanged text messages even today. We're going to talk early next week," Johnson said in an interview on Fox News's "Sunday Night in America With Trey Gowdy."
Despite the internal conflict, Johnson reiterated his commitment to the GOP conference and warned that dissension within the party works in favor of the Democrats. He also expressed his intention to discuss with Greene about reforming the budgeting and spending process going forward, emphasizing the need for unity within the Republican party.
Why It Matters: Greene’s attempt to oust Johnson has been met with criticism from within the party. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) openly criticized Greene’s move, labeling it as “idiotic.”
Earlier, Greene had initiated the process of ousting Johnson which could potentially disrupt the current power dynamics within the House of Representatives. This ongoing conflict within the GOP could have significant implications for the party’s unity and effectiveness in the House.
