Amazon.Com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has started delivering prescriptions at doorstep using drones in College Station, Texas city.

Eligible Amazon Pharmacy customers can select "free drone delivery in less than 60 minutes" at checkout, the company said in a release.

A pharmacist will then ensure medications are loaded and transported to a customer's home within the next hour.

College Station residents selecting drone delivery will have access to more than 500 medications that treat common conditions, including flu, asthma, and pneumonia.

Additionally, they can avail themselves of One Medical, a primary care service that combines virtual and in-person consultations.

Cameras on the drone feed into a neural network trained to identify objects.

Upon reaching the customer's residence, the drone descends gently and securely above a designated delivery marker.

Customers retrieve their packages without any direct interaction with the drone.

"Our drones fly over traffic, eliminating the excess time a customer's package might spend in transit on the road," said Calsee Hendrickson, director of product and program management at Prime Air.

This swift access to care, coupled with prompt medication delivery, not only enhances treatment outcomes but also enables customers to receive care from the convenience of their homes.

"That's the beauty of drone delivery, and medications were the first thing our customers said they also want delivered quickly via drone. Speed and convenience top the wish list for health purchases," Hendrickson added.

Price Action: AMZN shares are trading lower by 1.74% to $129.18 on the last check Wednesday.
