On May 25, 1931, the New York Stock Exchange delivered its first public report on the total number of shares sold short to that day, as well as that amount as a percentage of the total equity available on the market -- the short interest.

On that day, the NYSE reported 5.6 million shorted shares, just 12 percent of the exchange's monthly trading volume.

Eighty-six years later, shorting data is the basis of some trader’s entire strategy. According to the NYSE’s most recent Short Interest Report, short equity represents nearly $13.7 billion in market value.
