Toward the end of trading Friday, the Dow traded up 0.22 percent to 19,775.44 while the NASDAQ climbed 0.09 percent to 5,544.91. The S&P also rose, gaining 0.12 percent to 2,266.30.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Non-cyclical consumer goods & services shares gained around 0.84 percent in trading on Friday.

In trading on Friday, healthcare shares slipped by 0.27 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (NYSE: BMY), down 11 percent, and Synergy Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: SGYP), down 6 percent.

Top Headline

General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) reported in-line earnings for its latest quarter, but sales missed expectations.

General Electric posted adjusted Q4 earnings of $0.46 per share on revenue of $33.1 billion. Analysts projected earnings of $0.46 per share on revenue of $33.6 billion.


Equities Trading UP

Tucows Inc. (USA) (NASDAQ: TCX) shares shot up 17 percent to $42.45 after the company announced plans to acquire eNom from Rightside for $83.5 million.

Shares of Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: SWKS) got a boost, shooting up 12 percent to $87.70 after the company reported upbeat results for its first quarter and issued a strong outlook for the second quarter. The company also announced a $500 million buyback plan.

Rightside Group Ltd (NASDAQ: NAME) shares were also up, gaining 13 percent to $9.19. Tucows announced plans to acquire eNom from Rightside for $83.5 million.


Equities Trading DOWN

Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: PSTI) shares dropped 20 percent to $1.12. Pluristem disclosed that it has increased its bought deal offering to $15 million of stock and warrants.

Shares of Affimed NV (NASDAQ: AFMD) were down around 21 percent to $1.70. Affimed priced its public offering of 10,000,000 of its common shares at $1.80 per common share.

Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ: URRE) was down, falling around 12 percent to $2.37 after the company reported a closing of $9.7 million public offering.


Commodities


In commodity news, oil traded up 2.07 percent to $53.20 while gold traded up 0.48 percent to $1,207.30.

Silver traded up 0.46 percent Friday to $17.08, while copper rose 0.48 percent to $2.62.

Eurozone

European shares closed mixed today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 slipped 0.07 percent, the Spanish Ibex Index rose 0.01 percent, while Italy’s FTSE MIB Index slipped 0.06 percent. Meanwhile the German DAX gained 0.29 percent, and the French CAC 40 rose 0.20 percent while U.K. shares fell 0.14 percent.

Economics

The total number of active U.S. oil rigs rose by 29 to 551 rigs in the week to January 20, Baker Hughes Inc reported.
