Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, is a known fitness buff and hits the gym at 3:45 a.m. before heading to work. The executive also sits on Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE)'s Board of Directors and the National Football Foundation. As such, it isn't surprising that the Apple Watch is a valuable fitness and health tool that can actually save lives.

While promoting the launch of Apple's new iPad Pro, Cook also discussed the Apple Watch. The executive told the UK-based Telegraph a story of how the Watch may have played a vital role in saving a high school football player's life.

Cook said that the high school senior learnt from the Apple Watch he was wearing that his heart rate appeared to be elevated. The concerned athlete pointed it out to his trainer who sent him immediately to a doctor for further examination.

"The doctor told him he would have died the following day had he not come in," Cook said. "Basically his organs were shutting down."

Cook hinted that Apple's ambitions within the health sphere are expected to expand from the current sensors and heart rate monitors in the Apple Watch. However, the executive didn't offer any specifics, but did say that the Watch won't become a regulated and government approved licensed health product that needs to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Cook noted that filling for an FDA approval would "hold us back from innovating too much" but remains open to the idea of bringing apps to the platform to fill any void.
