Sprint Offers HD Voice on 2G & New Galaxy S5 with Health Apps - Analyst Blog

Sprint Corporation (NYSE: S) is spreading its business with new offerings in diverse fields. The company recently announced the availability of its high-definition (NYSE: HD) voice network across its nationwide 2G service. The new technology is currently supported on 28 postpaid and 33 prepaid smartphones and aims to enhance the quality and audio range of standard voice calls.

The company already has approximately 16 million customers using its HD-capable devices. Moving on, Sprint expects this new technology to boost the sale of HD-capable devices.

Apart from the launch of HD voice, Sprint also unveiled Galaxy S5 Sport – a new smartphone for health and fitness enthusiasts. The new phone will offer users access to fitness tracking, educational information and other utility applications to assist them in their exercising and diet schedules. In addition, the smartphone can also monitor the heart rate before and after physical activity with a built-in heart-rate monitor.

Starting Jul 25, Galaxy S5 Sport will be available on Sprint's network. We expect the new device not only to support higher smartphone penetration for the company but also increase the sale of Sprint Fit Live – a complete mobile health and fitness package.

The news comes close on the heels of Sprint's Neurodiversity ID pack launch last week, which targets management of neurodevelopment disorders like autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Currently available on select Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android based smartphones under the Sprint banner, this new application highlights Sprint's commitment toward serving the special-needs community. This ID pack marks a step toward the company's expansion in the e-health market, which is currently an emerging business opportunity in several developed nations.

In the same vein, Sprint has also been expanding its mobile health facility in Kansas City, resulting in the development and commercialization of emerging mobile healthcare applications and services.

With the advent of advanced wireless technology and widespread data usage, it is quite likely that the health care market will also stride forward using technologies that will make it more accessible, reliable and cost efficient to its target market. As a result, it is imperative that Sprint and other technology-driven companies tap this golden opportunity and undertake efforts to bridge the gap between the traditional form of health care and the rising need for a technology driven health care system.

Currently, Sprint has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
