The Browser Company has introduced a new iOS app, Arc Search, that combines a browser, search engine, and AI to offer a different web search experience.
What Happened: The Browser Company's Arc Search is designed to transform the way users interact with the Internet. It generates a comprehensive webpage in response to a search query.
While the Arc Browser has been in development for a few years now, the Arc Search app has been developed and launched in the span of a few months.
Upon receiving a query, the Arc Search app browses the web and presents a detailed summary of the information, including related links and bullet points.
Though not flawless, the app’s "Browse for me" feature is noteworthy. It provides an overview of a search query and links to relevant pages.
The company’s CEO, Josh Miller, has stated that Arc Search is part of a larger shift for the Arc browser, with plans to launch a cross-platform syncing system, Arc Anywhere, and introduce AI-powered features to Arc on other platforms.
"Late this fall, we realized, we don’t like using our computers on the weekend, Arc's companion iPhone app felt like a desktop port, [and] the mobile web is so broken & frustrating," Miller said.
Arc Search is currently available only on iOS.
Why It Matters: The launch of Arc Search marks a significant milestone in the evolution of web search technology.
The new app, as described on its App Store page, offers key features like an auto-up keyboard for quicker searches, always-on ad and tracker blocking, and a "Browse for Me" feature to summarize multiple webpages at once.
The app also promises to keep things tidy with an auto-archive feature for inactive tabs and a reader mode to minimize distractions.
