Chip manufacturer Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) is reportedly facing a legal battle with automotive supplier Valeo SE following an incident where an Nvidia engineer allegedly revealed stolen data during a video conference.

What Happened: An Nvidia engineer inadvertently displayed a file during a video call in March 2022 that contained data about autonomous vehicle technology, reportedly stolen from his previous employer Valeo, as per a report by BNN Bloomberg. The engineer, Mohammad Moniruzzaman, had previously been convicted for violation of business secrets in Germany. Now, Valeo is seeking legal action against Nvidia in California.

As per the report, Valeo alleges that Moniruzzaman transferred a significant number of files and substantial source code to his personal email account before leaving the company in 2021. The file shared during the video call contained one of Valeo’s source code files that was recognized by the attendees. They were able to take a screenshot of the same.

Why It Matters: Nvidia, on its part, reportedly stated that the company had no interest in Valeo’s code or its supposed trade secrets. When confronted by Paris-based Valeo's German unit, it said that in addition to cooperating with the German criminal probe, it also conducted its own internal inquiry. The outcome of this investigation was that the engineer had done no harm. Despite these efforts, Valeo proceeded to file a lawsuit against Nvidia on November 7 in San Jose, California.

Moniruzzaman was convicted for business secrets infringement by a Stuttgart court and was fined €14,400 ($15,750) in September, the report noted. Nvidia has not yet made a public statement about the lawsuit.

Price Action: On Monday Nvidia shares closed 2.28% higher at $504.20 in the regular session and gained 0.28% in the after-hours trading.
