After the ousting of Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as the House Speaker, questions appear about appointing his successor. Following the 216-210 vote on Tuesday to remove McCarthy, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), a his close ally, was selected as the interim Speaker. However, his tenure is limited to three legislative days.

As reported by Al Jazeera, the date for the vote to elect a new Speaker has not been confirmed yet. The previous vote in January, which led to McCarthy’s initial appointment, faced significant difficulty in garnering enough votes, spanning over 15 ballots.

Under the U.S. Constitution, the House speaker does not necessarily have to be a member of Congress. This has led to speculation around non-traditional candidates, including former President Donald Trump.

While McCarthy is not barred from running for House Speaker, he wishes not to.

The role of the acting Speaker is somewhat ambiguous, with the responsibility to facilitate the election of a new speaker. As noted by Republican Representative Kelly Armstrong, McHenry’s main task will be to “get us a new speaker.”
