Leaked Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) documents from early 2022 revealed the Xbox Series S, despite being less powerful than the Series X and PlayStation 5, is surprisingly more popular: 74.8% of Xbox Series owners own Series S and 25.1% own Series X.
According to IGN, the Series S's popularity can be attributed to its affordability, priced at $299, and its ability to play next-gen games at a lower graphical setting.

It also appealed to parents seeking a budget-friendly gaming console for their kids, especially due to its lack of a disc drive and digital game library.
Additionally, the Series S is considered more portable-friendly and has unique accessories, including an external display attachment.
These findings were part of a series of revelations from the leaked Xbox court documents, shedding light on Microsoft's gaming plans, including plans for next-gen console refresh and the company's cloud gaming ambitions.
Is Game Preservation At Risk With Xbox Series X Brooklyn Going All-Digital In 2024?
The leaked documents revealed Microsoft was planning an all-digital lineup of console refreshes for the Xbox Series X/S in 2024, with a new Xbox Series X codenamed Brooklyn that lacks a disc drive but offers more hard drive space and has a $500 price tag.
This development raised concerns about the future of game preservation, with some players fearing Microsoft may be moving away from physical game discs, Kotaku reported.
The move towards an all-digital future comes as digital storefronts for older console generations are gradually shutting down, potentially jeopardizing the availability of digital games.
While players can currently download owned games, the fragility of digital game preservation remains a concern, especially as online games continue to shut down.
