The United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against all three major U.S. motor companies, Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F), General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) and Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), has dominated news headlines the past week. Benzinga visited one of the strike sites last week to talk with the people on the front lines, to understand their specific reasons for striking.

“I’m fired up,” Brian Silverstein said. “I’m out here to support the UAW and the working class at large… People’s lives are getting worse and worse every single year. They keep saying inflation is going down, but prices are still high, we can’t afford to live.”

UAW President Shawn Fain spoke at the rally, calling out the big three auto companies for generating record profits while refusing to meet the demands of the UAW that include higher pay and more retirement benefits. Fain said that during GM CEO Mary Barra’s eight-minute CNN segment on Friday, she made more than any UAW worker will make in two weeks. Fain added that a UAW worker would have to work for 440 years to make what Barra makes in one year.
