The House Republican party is currently embroiled in what House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has termed a “civil war.”
What Happened: Jeffries, during an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” said the internal strife within the GOP is not only causing chaos and dysfunction but also hindering the government’s ability to solve problems for the American people.
"Let's be clear, House Republicans are in middle of a civil war."
"Civil war has the following attributes: Chaos, dysfunction and extremism. The House Republican civil war is hurting hard-working American taxpayers and limiting our ability to be able to solve problems on their behalf, it's unfortunate but as House Democrats we are going to continue to try and find common ground with the other side of the aisle."
The minority leader called upon his Republican colleagues to put an end to the infighting and focus on their duties to the American people. "We urge our Republican colleagues in the House to join us, stop fighting each other, end the reckless, reprehensible Republican civil war and let's get to the business of the American people."
The GOP’s majority in the House is slim, and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) could potentially face a government shutdown without the support of a united party. However, Jeffries did not disclose whether the Democrats would back McCarthy in case of a possible ousting.
Following Jeffries on “This Week,” Republican Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) expressed her displeasure with the repeated use of the term “civil war.”
Why It Matters: The current conflict within the House Republicans has been a topic of discussion even before Jeffries’ comments. Earlier this month, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) labeled the House Republicans as “out of control” due to an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden initiated by Speaker McCarthy.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) has also warned that the GOP's attempt to impeach President Biden could lead to the party’s downfall. Raskin suggested that many Democrats believe McCarthy’s impeachment drive could end disastrously for the Republicans.
