As Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) web browser, Google Chrome, marks its 15 years of existence, the company has unveiled some exciting updates, including a redesign, advanced AI integration, and enhanced security measures.
What Happened: This month, not only Google is celebrating its 25th birthday, but Google Chrome is also turning 15. To celebrate Chrome’s big day, the web browser is having a design overhaul with a series of impactful updates.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of the tech giant, took to Twitter, now rebranded as X, to share this news, highlighting the world’s leading web browser’s transformation.

Design Overhaul: Google Chrome is undergoing a design transformation to align more closely with the visual style of Android and the broader Google suite. This includes new light and dark color palettes reminiscent of Chrome’s legacy themes, with accents resembling those found on Pixel smartphones.
Web Store Update: The Chrome Web Store is receiving a makeover to match the Material You design, introduced to Android in 2021. Users can expect a carousel featuring new browser extensions and categories, including AI-powered extensions, and an Editors’ Picks page for easier discovery.
AI-Powered Features: The Chrome side panel is being introduced, offering quick access to Google Search with additional context related to on-screen content, similar to Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Edge’s Bing search integration.
Enhanced Security: Google is also improving Chrome’s security by implementing real-time checks against a database of known malicious actors, resulting in a 25% boost in protection against malware and phishing threats.
Why It’s Important: According to web-tracking company StatCounter, Chrome currently holds the top spot as the most widely used web browser worldwide.
In the period spanning from July to August 2023, Chrome was used by 63.6% of global internet users. Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Safari secured the second position with a usage rate of just under 20% among the world’s online population.
Meanwhile, Edge (5.4%), Firefox (2.9%), Opera (2.7%), and Samsung (2.3%) lag significantly behind in terms of browser usage.
