Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Co‘s (NYSE:TM) joint venture with China FAW Group CorporationFAW Toyota– has issued a recall for over 12,000 bZ3 vehicles in China, citing an issue with the door.

What Happened: As per the statement on China’s State administration for market regulation website, 12,205 bZ3 vehicles produced this year will be recalled starting July 27. The rear doors might either be always locked or unlocked owing to the gap between the outer door handle and door lock parts when they cooperate with each other, the statement read.

As for a solution, the company will replace the rear door’s outer handle without any cost to the customer and add gaskets to avoid any safety hazards.

Why It Matters: Toyota announced the bZ3 less than a year ago in October. It is the second of the bZ models following the bZ4X. Last year, Toyota recalled 2,700 of its bZ4X vehicles worldwide owing to tire safety risks.

The bZ3 battery-electric sedan was developed together by Toyota’s JV with Warren Buffett-backed BYD- BYD Toyota EV Technology Co– and FAW Toyota. Its electrification system combines BYD’s lithium-ion LFP battery with Toyota’s electrification technologies.
