Netflix Plus Hulu Equals…

One fresh startup is attempting to curate your content for the ultimate streaming video source.
“Consumers are tired of having to go to multiple websites,” insists James Norman, the founder and CEO of
myUbi.tv
, a brand-new discovery entertainment platform. “Life is short, time is constrained – if you want to watch something, you want to watch something, so we made this website that pretty much aggregates all of the premium content.”
“We're trying to build the Pandora P for videos.”
Norman's goal is a lofty one, no doubt. But with powerful apps already in place, the company appears to be headed in the right direction. “We just finished our Netflix
NFLX
app,” Norman told Benzinga during a recent interview. “And then we're going to do Amazon
AMZN
and then ESPN. Hulu Plus isn't an open API, so we have to work with them to do that. So that's on our list of things to do [in 2012].”
“No Apple stuff yet.”
While Ubi supports Android tablets, don't expect to see an Apple
AAPL
compatible app anytime soon. “The publishers are super anti-iPad and iOS,” Norman explained. “So that's a future thing. Other than the Android app, [we have] connected TV apps coming out [this year].”
Cutting Comcast Out of the Mix
Norman said that he first created Ubi in an effort to get away from the headache of cable conglomerates. “Comcast

kept changing my bill,” he said. “I figured there was a better way to watch video. I can still pay the publisher, so I'm just gonna cut [Comcast] out of the picture.” But Comcast may not be out of the picture forever. “That story has kind of changed now because we found that our framework is kind of valuable,” Norman explained. “So we might start trying to license it to cable providers. That way they can deliver streaming content to their subscribers. All in all, it was really about personalizing the user experience and not having to think about what I wanted to watch, ‘cause what was missing from online was the laziness of traditional TV. Online takes so much effort, and that's why so many people don't do it. If you can just turn it on and watch it, you've improved the experience that much more.”
Content, Content!
“There's such a wide variety,” Norman said of Ubi's content. “There's content from Sony
SNE
. There's independent content. We do a couple of original productions. We also do a hip-hop show, it's gonna be like Yo! MTV Raps or the Rap City: Tha Basement meets The View. We're gonna be doing a lot of different original content, and really source out what the best long-form content is. We don't do any user-generated or three-minute videos. It's all long-form content.” Norman said that Ubi's long-form videos come from independent producers, which “can be challenging sometime because people have this pie-in-the-sky dream of selling it to a network.” “It's like, you've been trying this for six years, it's not happening!” said Norman. “Let's just figure this out and make you some money right here.” But while TV may be Ubi's primary form of content, the site is happily branching out to feature full-length films. “We have a production partner,
First Element
,” said Norman. “First Element produced its first full-length original film last year. We're gonna stream that, and hopefully some more projects coming down the pipeline.”
