Ingres Community Comes Together for 2010 Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Ingres Corporation, the leading provider of open source database management software and pioneer of the New Economics of IT, hosted the fifth annual Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint, this year in Manila, Philippines, where community members collaborated on developing new features for Ingres OpenROAD. The event, held in mid-March, provided Ingres OpenROAD Server training for attendees and resulted in a number of improvements to the solution that will give developers new tools for increased productivity, error handling, and flexibility.

Ingres OpenROAD is a rapid application development and flexible deployment solution that allows developers to quickly build and deploy sophisticated high performance and high availability business applications on a variety of platforms, accessing a broad range of data sources. Attendees of the Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint came from around the world to learn the process on how to contribute to projects that enhance the solution. Ingres engineers were present to walk them through this process during a hands-on workshop which implemented the features.

“These events are invaluable for both Ingres and the community,” said Bill Maimone, senior vice president of worldwide engineering, Ingres. “We had great attendance and were able to accomplish so much during this code sprint – it’s yet another great example of why the community is so important to open source. We look forward to more innovative development at future events.”

The Ingres Asia Pacific OpenROAD Code Sprint brought together over 50 developers from the UK, US, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Philippines, for the largest Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint to date in Makati City, Philippines.

“The Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint gave us a great opportunity to network with developers from other countries and companies that also develop and maintain applications on Ingres OpenROAD and Ingres Database,” said Narayanaswamy Dhanalakshmi of Jardine Lloyd Thompson, Singapore. “It was quite interesting and taught us about many Ingres OpenROAD features that we had previously been unfamiliar with, while providing a wonderful experience getting to know some of the Ingres staff.”

D-Source, an Ingres Partner based in the Philippines, helped to facilitate and support the Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint.

“The code sprint was a terrific combination of the community, Ingres and D-Source working together towards a common goal – improving Ingres OpenROAD,” said Portia Cruz, chief executive officer, D-Source. “D-Source is proud to have had the opportunity to work closely with Ingres and its community members to contribute to the updates in Ingres OpenROAD. Together in strong partnership, we look forward to growing our relationship and serving Ingres customers and community members.”

Some of the features that were worked on during Ingres OpenROAD Code Sprint include:

Productivity - The productivity of Ingres OpenROAD developers will be increased by an enhancement that adds the ability to create multiple composite fields natively within the frame editor at the same time. Prior to this, Ingres OpenROAD developers had to construct composite fields individually, which was laborious and time consuming.

Improved User Interface and Controls - Improved flexibility in the presentation of RadioFields means that the width of the items within a RadioField is no longer determined by the length of the longest element within the list of choices, but may be set appropriately for each item within the list.

Improvements to the presentation of background images on Ingres OpenROAD controls, such as buttons, provide improved flexibility and enable Ingres OpenROAD developers to build applications that closely mimic the look and feel of applications built using different application development technologies.

Improved Error Handling - Ingres OpenROAD applications can now return an ExitCode to the operating system so that other programs and scripts can be triggered to react accordingly. With this enhancement, Ingres OpenROAD applications can now fit more easily into scripted environments.

Community members will gather next at the UK Ingres Users Association (IUA) Summer Conference in London on June 10, 2010. Registration and additional information may be found at http://www.iua.org.uk/.
