Fox Renews And Cancels Long-Running 'Bones' As Lawsuit Over Profits Rolls On

While Twenty-First Century Fox Inc FOXA is still wrapped up in a lawsuit with its lead cast members and an executive producer of its long-running drama “Bones,” the network announced on Thursday it had made a decision on the show’s future.

Fox revealed the series would return for an abbreviated twelfth season, which will also be its final run. The 12 episodes are slated to air during the 2016–2017 season and promise to give fans a “satisfying” conclusion. This will bring the show’s final episode number count to 246, making it one of the network’s longest-running and most reliable series.

Just last month network executives stressed without co-leads David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel there was no show and there was no chance of it continuing without the pair. However, a lawsuit over the allocation of the show’s earnings seemed to be a constant threat to bring the series to a premature halt.

Investors were reminded of the lawsuit this week when the plaintiffs fought back against Fox’s attempts to move the case to arbitration. Yet, all involved (including Fox network co-heads Dana Walden and Gary Newman who originally helped develop the series) were able to come to this arrangement to ensure the show’s loyal audience was able to get proper closure.

The show’s eleventh season will resume with new episodes starting on Thursday April 14 at 8 p.m. EST.
