The population of Detroit has dropped to its lowest level in 100 years, according to a report by the
Huffington Post
. The population of the city stood at 713,777 last year compared to 951,270 in 2000 when the previous census was taken. In 1950, Detroit's population was 1.85 million, but the decline of the motor industry and rising levels of violent crime have seen people vote with their feet and leave the Motor City in floods. "The census figures clearly show how crucial it is to reinvent Michigan," Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said in a statement. "It is time for all of us to realign our expectations so that they reflect today's realities. We cannot cling to the old ways of doing business. We cannot successfully transition to the 'New Michigan' if young, talented workers leave our state. By the same token, Michigan will not succeed if Detroit and other major cities don't succeed." At Benzinga's Michigan office, just outside of Detroit, we are attempting to aid the reinvention of the state through innovation, hard work, by harnessing the immense talent in the Metro Detroit area and by bringing talent in from elsewhere.
