GoDaddy CEO Explains Why You Should Own A Domain Name And Why You Should Be Using It

Godaddy Inc GDDY CEO Blake Irvin says owning a domain improves the digital identity of an individual and businesses.

"I happen to own blakeirvin.com and have blakeirvin.com as my email address. When I show in someone's inbox, I am a professional," Irvin told CNBC.

Scottsdale, Arizona-based GoDaddy offers domain name registration products that enable customers to engage with others at the initial stage of establishing a digital identity through hosting and presence products including website builders and shared Website hosting.

Irvin said the domain name directs to one's LinkedIn account, thereby improving one's digital identity. He added that owning a domain name is more effective than a normal email address like gmail.com or yahoo.com, because of its innate multidimensional characteristics.

How To Chose

Irvin said a URL is considered "strong" if it is short and memorable.

"Just don't get the ones that represent your business, but get the ones that [are] also more defensible," Irvin said.

Of the various domains, Irvin said dot com "is still the king."

There are Generic Top Level Domains such as .wtf, location based domains such as .berlin, .london and Country Code Top Level Domain (CCLTD), which are nothing but country-based domains such as .mx for Mexico.

"If you have an idea, then the first step is to buy a domain name," Irvin added.

At time of writing, shares of GoDaddy were up 0.57 percent to $31.88.
