Felix Salmon On The Future Of Finance Media

Former Thomson Reuters journalist Felix Salmon says he doesn’t like to make predictions about the future of financial media.

Not too long ago, Salmon left Reuters to work as a senior editor for the television and digital network Fusion. He recently joined Benzinga’s #PreMarket Prep to talk about what he does think the future of financial journalism holds.

First and foremost, Salmon thinks that those forecasting the death of the terminal businesses are deluding themselves.

“Having wrote for Thomson Reuters, knowing a lot of people who wrote for Bloomberg -- Those are really, really magnificent, very large, very well-resourced businesses,” he said. “They’re not going anywhere.”

What Salmon said he’s really looking forward to is the increasing amount of information coming directly from professionals, themselves, rather than the journalists.

“Journalists don’t know anything. All we know is the stuff which we get from talking to professionals,” he said.

He thinks that professionals are already doing a pretty good job of putting their own information out there through the websites and other sources available. Especially after the JOBS Act was passed, Salmon said that compliance officers are becoming more comfortable with this kind of activity.

“What I’m looking forward to is a lot of the conversations that used to be hidden to the public -- conversations between journalists and professionals, conversations between professionals and professionals -- will now become surfaced, and everyone will be able to see what people are talking about,” he said.

Salmon also talked about why he transitioned from Reuters to Fusion and why he had an issue with Michael Lewis’ book, “Flash Boys.”
