The Dow rose 0.51 percent to 18,239.05, while the NASDAQ composite index gained 0.93 percent to 5,306.28. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.52 percent to 2,152.32.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Photographic Equipment & Supplies: This industry slipped 4.5 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was GoPro Inc (NASDAQ: GPRO), which fell 5 percent. GoPro shares have declined 48.14 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 3.38 percent in the same period.
  • Publishing - Books: This industry declined 1.1 percent by 11:00 am with Pearson PLC (ADR) (NYSE: PSO) moving down 2.2 percent. Pearson shares have dropped 31.53 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 3.38 percent in the same period.
  • Silver: This industry fell 0.7 percent by 11:00 am ET. Endeavour Silver Corp (NYSE: EXK) shares dropped 5.2 percent in today's trading. Endeavour Silver shares have climbed 158.76 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has increased 3.38 percent in the same period.
  • Publishing - Newspapers: The industry dropped 0.6 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Daily Journal Corporation (NASDAQ: DJCO), which declined 3.9 percent.
