The Dow rose 0.48 percent to 18,665.91, while the NASDAQ composite index climbed 0.62 percent to 5,265.34. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.43 percent to 2,193.35.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Specialty Retail, Other: This industry slipped 0.9 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was Murphy USA Inc (NYSE: MUSA), which fell 0.5 percent. Murphy USA shares have surged 47.82 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 3.88 percent in the same period.
  • Advertising Agencies: This industry declined 0.6 percent by 11:00 am with VisionChina Media Inc (ADR) (NASDAQ: VISN) moving down 1.8 percent. VisionChina Media shares have dropped 52.24 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 3.88 percent in the same period.
  • Meat Products: This industry fell 0.4 percent by 11:00 am ET. Hormel Foods Corp (NYSE: HRL) shares dropped 1.3 percent in today's trading. Hormel Foods is expected to release quarterly earnings on August 18, 2016.
  • Long Distance Carriers: The industry dropped 0.4 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Elephant Talk Communications Corp (NYSE: ETAK), which declined 6.3 percent.
