Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR)'s stock has lost nearly 50 percent over the past year, and even if the stock were to erase all of the past year's losses, it is still far removed from its all-time high of $74.

If Twitter needs to be saved, it could find a savior from an unlikely source: the presumed Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump.

As noted by CNN Money's Paul LaMonica, the current Republican convention marks the first major party convention since Twitter's 2013 IPO. After all, Twitter is "undoubtedly the social media place to be for many politicians."

Meanwhile, accusations of Melania Trump plagiarizing a few lines from Michelle Obama's 2008 speech led to the creation of a popular hashtag on Twitter, #FamousMelaniaTrumpQuotes.

"The GOP convention has already had a seminal Twitter moment on its first night," LaMonica wrote.

Can Trump Actually Save Twitter?

The short answer from LaMonica is don't count on Trump saving Twitter. The company needs advertising dollars and more users, not necessarily more hashtags and trending topics.

Twitter is, however, busy inking new deals to improve its reach among political and sports junkies. The company will live stream both the Republican and Democratic conventions.

Bottom line, any near-term boost to Twitter's business needs to be sustainable over the long term. If not, Twitter's comeback story will "end as prematurely as the campaigns of all those Republican presidential contenders who failed to top Trump."
