For office workers everywhere, the news that regular exercise isn’t enough to keep the harmful effects of sitting all day could come as a jolt. When added to time spent sitting at home, or in the car commuting, many people sit for longer than nine hours a day, according to the Business Insider coverage.

The reasons why sitting for long periods is bad for you are not entirely understood, but the good news is how easy it is to combat its effects. Doctors say getting up and spending a few minutes up and moving every hour can do the trick.

Even just nine calories burned per hour adds up to 80 calories per eight-hour workday. Multiply that by the standard 40-hour work week and that’s 400 calories a week.
