The Dow rose 0.49 percent to 17,917.77, while the NASDAQ composite index climbed 0.52 percent to 4,869.13. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.50 percent to 2,099.36.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Diversified Computer Systems: This industry slipped 3.5 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was HP Inc (NYSE: HPQ), which fell 4 percent. HP raised its earnings outlook for the third quarter. The company projects adjusted earnings of $0.43 to $0.46 per share for the quarter.
  • Sporting Activities: This industry declined 0.8 percent by 11:00 am with Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE: PLNT) moving down 3.8 percent.
  • Home Health Care: This industry fell 0.8 percent by 11:00 am ET. Surgical Care Affiliates Inc (NASDAQ: SCAI) shares dropped 2.1 percent in today's trading. Goldman Sachs downgraded Surgical Care Affiliates from Buy to Neutral.
  • Catalog & Mail Order Houses: The industry dropped 0.7 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Vipshop Holdings Ltd - ADR (NYSE: VIPS), which declined 1.6 percent. Vipshop shares have tumbled 50.58 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has declined 0.93 percent in the same period.
