After seeing its latest original series "Vinyl" not click with audiences and its high-profile "Westworld" delayed, HBO (Time Warner IncTWX)) needed a big acquisition to silence critics.

On Friday, it was announced the network scored that key victory with "Sharp Objects" – he latest page-to-screen project from "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn. The series centers on a reporter who after a short stay in a psychiatric hospital returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two young girls and gets emotionally involved in the case.

Oscar nominee Amy Adams is inked to star in the role which only makes the win that much more valuable as Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) and other top networks were in talks for the project. Jason Blumhouse, who has made a name for himself and his Blumhouse Productions through successful micro-budgeted projects is also on board as a producer.

"Sharp Objects" spent more than 70 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and won additional acclaim for Flynn in the literary world. Flynn had previously been working with HBO on "Utopia," with director David Fincher, but the series was abruptly halted last summer.
