According to a report by the New York Post, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer "accidentally started swinging the ax," which resulted in dozens of employees losing their jobs.

It's no secret that pressure continues to mount for Mayer to take drastic action to turn around the ailing company, including mass layoffs. However, the CEO should only fired people who were actually meant to be fired.

"They put people on firing lists who they didn't mean to — people who were lower on the performance scale but who weren't meant to get fired," a source told the New York Post. "But no one told the managers, and then they had the conversations, and it was like, 'Oops.' "

The New York Post added that up to 30 employees were affected. Naturally, the mistake "didn't go over well" with some of the supervisors. A common complaint from the supervisors included "this is the only person who does this job - how could you do this?"

A Yahoo spokeswomen told the New York Post that "there is zero truth to this rumor."
