  • Carl Icahn on Monday disclosed his long equity stakes (and those of his several funds) as of September 30, 2015.
  • His equity portfolio continued to be focused on information technology and industrial stocks. However, its market value fell from $31.2 billion in the second quarter to $27.87 billion by the end of the third quarter of the year.
  • Over the period, the hedge fund manager acquired four new stocks, sold out of one, increased his participation in two more companies, and trimmed his exposure to another two.

Despite some changes in the amount of shares held, the top three holdings in Icahn's portfolio remained unchanged in ranking. His wage continued to be placed on his own Icahn Enterprises LP (NASDAQ: IEP), of which he disclosed holding 114,551,382 shares, or more than 88 percent of the outstanding stock.

The second and third place were also still occupied by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CVI). The investor declared no changes in his Apple stake, which comprises 52,760,848 shares, and a 7 percent decline in his CVR position, to 71,198,718, or 81 percent of the company.

The most bullish move was probably the one Icahn made at Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: PYPL). Between July and September, inclusive, the famed investor started and built a position comprising 46,271,370 shares, worth more than $1.4 billion. This position makes Mr. Icahn the second-largest institutional investor of record in the payments company, only outranked by the Vanguard Group, which disclosed ownership of 64,773,302 shares.

Another very bullish move was the one recorded at Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE: LNG). Over the third quarter, the funds affiliated to Mr. Icahn acquired 27,471,241 shares of the mid-cap energy company, taking their holdings to an aggregate of 28,546,241 shares, worth almost $1.4 billion as well.

The one position Icahn closed has the one he held at eBay Inc (NASDAQ: EBAY), which comprised 109,940,772 shares. It seems like the money manager was actually betting on eBay’s payments division, PayPal, which was spun off during the quarter.

Disclosure: Javier Hasse holds no positions in any of the securities mentioned above.
