With August being a punishing month for U.S. stocks (the S&P 500 tumbled 5.8 percent), it is not surprising that exchange traded funds suffered outflows. The August sell-off sparked $112.3 billion of outflows from U.S.-listed exchange traded products, still a scant percentage of the over $2 trillion held exchange traded products trading in the U.S. at the end of the month.

Equity ETFs were particularly hard hit by investor departures last month, which was obviously the result of significant declines for the major U.S. indexes.
