Johan Santana took 134 pitches to accomplish the feat that eluded Tom Seaver, Doc Gooden and Nolan Ryan while they were members of the Mets. Seaver came within two outs of pitching a perfect game in the Mets championship year of 1969, only to be broken up by the Cubs Jimmy Qualls.Santana beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-0, ending the game by striking out David Freese on a 3-2 changeup. Mike Baxter made a spectacular catch in the 7th inning to preserve the historic event for Met fans.
