Wikipedia is still one of the most popular websites in the world, but people have stopped logging on to contribute and edit, according to founder Jimmy Wales.Speaking at Wiki's annual conference in Israel, Wales said, “We are not replenishing our ranks. It is not a crisis, but I consider it to be important."He will be concerned that Wikipedia doesn't go the same way as AOL (NYSE: AOL) and Myspace in seeing its popularity drift away into obscurity. He might not have helped his own cause though, when he described the average Wikipedia user as "a 26-year-old geeky male".Wales also said that the online encyclopedia now has more than 3 million pages, and so there are less entries to add. Still, the site still has 90,000 active contributors, and another 5,000 volunteer contributors are expected soon.Executive director Sue Gardner said that one tactic to increase participation has been to ask university staff to encourage their students to write entries. A positive that came out of the conference is that, in 2011, people are less likely to make fun of Wikipedia. The days of referring to the site as the “public bathroom wall of the internet” are apparently gone.
