In Q4, Netflix posted its biggest ever quarterly subscriber growth numbers, adding 7.05 million subscribers in the quarter. The news sent shares rocketing up 9 percent after hours.

Netflix Total Subscribers By Quarter:

  • Q1 of 2014 – 46.14 million.
  • Q2'14 — 48 million.
  • Q3'14 — 50.66 million
  • Q4'14 — 54.78 million
  • Q1'15 — 59.62 million
  • Q2'15 — 62.71 million
  • Q3'15 — 66.02 million
  • Q4'15 — 70.84 million
  • Q1'16 — 77.7 million
  • Q2'16 — 79.89 million
  • Q3'16 — 83.28 million
  • Q4'16 — 89.1 million
  • Q1'17 — 94.05 million

Netflix has steadily increased its subscriber base in the past 13 earnings releases with the largest gain coming in Q4 2016. With international subscribers continuing to ramp up, high expectations from Q1 subscriber numbers failed to deliver amongst considerable competition and a lull in compelling original content.
