As some retailers prepare to reap the full benefits of the holiday frenzy, others are choosing to shut shop on Thanksgiving Day, traditionally a family affair when people gorge themselves with roast turkey, mashed potatoes and corn bread, among other items.

The logic behind the decision to close on Thanksgiving is to allow customers and employees enjoy the occasion with friends and families. Some of them which close their brick-and-mortar operations on Thanksgiving could still operate through the online channel.

States such as Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine have archaic laws such as the Blue Laws that forbid stores from opening on holidays.
