Technology companies have been scrambling to prepare for the next generation of technology by acquiring machine intelligence startups. The most recent notable transaction occurred on Monday when Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced it has acquired Genee.

Genee is an artificial intelligence-powered scheduled service that simplifies the often time-consuming task of scheduled and rescheduled meetings.

According to Microsoft's official announcement, Genee "uses natural language processing and optimized decision-making algorithms so that interacting with a virtual assistant is just like interacting with a human one."

The Hows Behind Genee

Here is how the technology works. Suppose a business owner needs to schedule a meeting with a client to discuss business. An e-mail is sent to the client, but Genee works in the background and will streamline the process by emailing directly with the client on the user's behalf and find appropriate options that fit in with the user's schedule and preferences.

As noted by Recode, Microsoft's acquisition actually marks the third time this month alone that a large tech player acquired an artificial intelligence startup. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) acquired Nervana Systems, a deep learning startup, and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) "quietly" acquired Turi, a machine learning company that will help users explore songs, apps and news.

Microsoft will integrate its newly acquired technology into Office and Office 365.
