Adtran Says Verizon Commences 40G Fiber Broadband Trial With Its SDN-Optimized NG-PON2 Solution

ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN) disclosed Wednesday that Verizon has selected its SDN-optimized NG-PON2 solution for its upcoming lab trials. The company stated that the objective is to establish a cost-effective Fiber-to-the-Home solution, which meets business and residential requirements. The company is confident it is capable of scaling to 40G and beyond to meet market requirement.

ADTRAN said the initial test would be conducted at the telecom service provider's Lab in Waltham, Massachusetts. The company indicated that the focus would be on a number of features of NG-PON2. This included the execution of tunable multiple wavelength 40 Gigabit per second capability to support a mix of services on a common converged platform.

The company stated that this capability allows telecom carriers to address the increase in demand for critical service segments efficiently including residential Gigabit broadband, big data, IoT and premium cloud and enterprise services growth apart from expansion.

It quote Verizon press release of July 20 and pointed out that the telecom firm intends to deploy several of business services next year to start with. That would be followed by residential services as the technology matures and the market demands.

ADTRAN's SVP, Technology and Strategy, Jay Wilson, said, "NG-PON2, as evidenced by Verizon's commitment to it, can be a game changer as service providers look to advance their service capabilities over existing access infrastructures and underpin the open, programmable, scalable service architectures of the future. ADTRAN's NG-PON2 platform leverages innovative optic technologies to help overcome the most costly part of FTTH architecture so that the business case can broaden to include business and residential use cases."
