On Tuesday, March 1st, MoreSteam.com will support the 2016 ASQ Lean and Six Sigma Conference by leading a workshop and a separate presentation to an audience of Lean Six Sigma leaders gathered at the event.

MoreSteam.com's President and founder, Bill Hathaway, will lead participants in an extended, hands-on workshop titled "Follow the Clues to Success: Critical Thinking as a Lean Six Sigma Tool." The workshop activities put to practice the principle that critical thinking skills are an important, and often under-appreciated, aspect of Lean Six Sigma problem solving. The workshop focuses on practicing critical thinking in an open-ended practice-oriented environment. The question-driven methodology used in the define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) roadmap provides the foundation of the MoreSteam.com Sherlock Holmes zombie hunter project game, which serves as the basis for the workshop. Workshop participants will experience how practice --in the form of hands-on exercises, rather than lectures-- produces practitioners who are better prepared to complete projects, accelerating the rate of project completion.

In describing the workshop, Hathaway expanded on the motivation for using simulations such as the Sherlock Holmes zombie hunter game: "Our research confirms that proficiency in process improvement skills can be achieved only through practice, and that a combination of self-directed learning supplemented with facilitated simulations provides an excellent, highly effective model for building capability. Using games, such as the Sherlock Holmes simulation, accelerates the practice component in a safe, repeatable and scalable manner, which is often a challenge."

Mr. Hathaway's workshop will be at the Tapatio Cliffs Resort beginning at 9:15 a.m.

MoreSteam.com's Principal Statistician and Product Manager, Smita Skrivanek, will speak at the conference on the topic of statistical significance, and how to think critically about statistical significance in terms of "practical significance."

Statistical significance refers to whether an observed effect is larger than we would expect by chance and is typically addressed by p-values associated with T-tests or ANOVAs, etc. Practical significance is about whether the effect is useful in an applied context. In her presentation "Practical Significance: When Analysis and Cost Intersect," Ms. Skrivanek will address the importance of understanding that while an effect could be statistically significant, that does not in itself mean that the result should be pursued in the context of the problem to be solved. In commenting on the topic, Ms. Skrivanek observed, "we will address the roles that cost and risk play when considered relative to potential gains in process improvement, and how these considerations should be reflected both in test setup and interpretation of analytical results." Case studies will illustrate how the issues of risk, cost, and practical significance affect choices presented to decision makers faced with analytical results.

Ms. Skrivanek's presentation will be at the Tapatio Cliffs Resort at 2:45 p.m.
