According to Fortune, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) is expected to announce a large headcount reduction plan next week.

Fortune, citing "sources close to the server virtualization giant," reported that VMware could lay off up to 900 people, representing approximately 5 percent of its total workforce.

Fortune added that while a VMware spokesman declined to comment on the report, reduction to its staff "would not be unexpected." The report pointed out that EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), the majority shareholder of VMware, has already announced its own massive headcount reduction plans.

Finally, the report noted that VMware, EMC and Dell are all "struggling" to "pull their $67 billion merger across the goal line."
