What You Need To Know About SunGard's Global Coder Cup At FC Barcelona's Camp Nou

As of next Tuesday, FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou will be the stage for SunGard’s Global Coder Cup ’15, a financial technology “code-a-thon” in which 11 teams from five different countries will compete to design and implement a product “with an applicability to either internal or client-facing financial systems,” a press release informs.

The coders will have 48 hours to come up with an “innovative and actionable” technological product that uses big data tools, and analytics. The competitors will be judged by a panel including SunGard’s Chief Technology Officer, Steven Silberstein, and industry experts from Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA (ADR) (NYSE: BBVA)’s Coporate & Investment Banking division.

From the 68 teams in the preliminary group, 11 were selected to make it to the finals. The finalists, more than “50 SunGard technologists and engineers whose expertise cuts across the entire financial services landscape,” come from New Zealand, India, the United States, South Africa and China.

Last year’s winning team, Foo Tomatons created “an advanced financial compliance and regulation application that uses artificial intelligence to predict and potentially prevent fraud.”

“This year’s Coder Cup is about harnessing the power of data for the adaptive enterprise. Bigger, faster data alone is no longer enough for companies. Today, the focus needs to be on smarter data; the streamlining of the collection and aggregation of the data to enhance business operations in a more customized manner,” Silberstein noted.
