3D printers have made their way into the industrial world seamlessly, providing big businesses with a way to replace parts and make models quickly and cheaply. The devices have been slow to catch on for amateur users, as their complexity and cost keep the printers from becoming a staple in the home.

However, as more uses for 3D printing emerge, many foresee the general public taking more of an interest in the machines.

Nails

Clawz is a new startup that specializes in printing press-on nails. Fashionistas can choose from a variety of plastic and metal nail designs for between $50.00 and $150.00. The plastic nails last about five uses, and the metal option is meant to remain wearable as long as a user likes.

Buildings

The UAE has announced plans to build the world's first 3D printed office building in Dubai.

The structure will span 2,000 square feet and will require a 20-foot printer. Once printed, the components will then be assembled on-site to become an office building and filled with furnishings that have also been printed. Using a 3D printer is expected to save both time and money; some experts have estimated a 50 to 70 percent reduction in the time it takes to construct the building and a 50 to 80 percent reduction in labor costs.

Space

3D Printing has also been suggested for future space exploration. NASA has already used the technology to print objects at the International Space Station.

The printed objects are set to be returned to earth this year for testing to evaluate how much they differ from items printed on earth. The idea that 3D printing can be done in space has opened up a whole new possibility for the technology, as some believe 3D printers could eventually be used to build shelter on new planets.
