National nonprofit Kars4Kids released an important update to the Kars4Kids Safety App today as part of a broader effort to increase awareness of the dangers of leaving children in cars. With its streamlined interface and customizable settings, the new app makes it easy for parents to protect themselves against the possibility of forgetting a child due to a change in routine, stress, sleep deprivation or the like.

As many as 37 children are estimated to die every year from hyperthermia (heatstroke) after being left in hot cars. Outside temperatures do not have to be very high to pose a risk, but with this summer presenting record-breaking heat levels, the danger is even greater. Within minutes, a car's interior can reach lethal temperatures for a child.

"People think these tragic stories only happen to neglectful parents," says Kars4Kids representative Wendy Kirwan. "But research has shown that this can happen to the most responsible, loving parents. Our app is designed for those parents."

The app is simple, yet effective, using Bluetooth technology to trigger an alert when the car is turned off, reminding the driver about the child in the backseat. The alert's settings are customizable, allowing for users to tailor the app to their circumstances. The app is free for Android devices and available for download at http://www.kars4kids.org/safety-app.

To accentuate the danger a hot car presents, Kars4Kids filmed a social experiment challenging adults to stick it out in a hot car for a $100 reward. The tear-jerking video is a powerful incentive for parents to download the app.

Kars4Kids is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works to give back to the community through a variety of education, youth development, family outreach and faith-based programs. The charity provides an array of services to children and families including educational programming, school placement, tuition assistance, mentorship programs, cultural activities, religious instruction, recreation and guidance counseling.
